Aqueous humor is the fluid that nourishes your eyes. This fluid plumps up your eyes. It needs to be regularly drained to keep a constant and normal pressure inside your eye’s anterior chamber. Your eye is made up of two chambers, the anterior and posterior. These chambers were separated by the lens. The anterior chamber contains the visible components of your eyes, such as the iris.
However, there are instances where aqueous humor can’t be drained away. This can lead to pressure build-up inside the iris of your eyes. This phenomenon can damage your optic nerve. It can also cause your vision to narrow over time. This eye disorder is medically known as glaucoma. This is particularly occurring when the special channels that drain the aqueous humor in your eyes become blocked and the fluid is prevented from draining properly.
This eye damage can cause two different vision problems. One problem it can cause is narrowed vision. This is due to the fading of the vision field’s edge. Another problem is that certain blank areas can develop closer to the centre of your vision. These conditions can either happen slowly or suddenly.
There are two types of glaucoma. One is known as chronic or open-angle glaucoma. This condition develops slowly over time. It might not even be detected by the person suffering from it, not until their eyesight becomes affected. Another one is closed-angle glaucoma. This type of glaucoma happens more suddenly and more painfully than the other one. This one is linked to ageing. People who are over 40 years old are prone to glaucoma. Those who have family history of this eye disorder, diabetes and short-sightedness have high risk for glaucoma as well.
